Cracked leather is often treated as an inevitable sign of age, but in most cases, cracking is the result of specific, preventable conditions rather than simple time passing. Understanding the actual cause is the first step to stopping it before it starts.

Cracking Is a Moisture Problem, Not Just an Age Problem

Leather stays flexible because of natural oils within the material. When those oils are depleted, through sun exposure, heat, or repeated cleaning without conditioning, the leather becomes dry and stiff, and stiff leather cracks under the everyday flexing of normal use. Two leather sofas of the same age can be in completely different condition depending on whether that oil balance was maintained.

Sun Exposure Accelerates the Timeline Significantly

UV exposure dries leather out directly, and the effect compounds daily if a piece sits in a sunbeam for hours at a time. This is one of the most controllable factors, since simply repositioning furniture or adding a curtain to block direct sun during peak hours meaningfully slows this process.

Indoor Heating Has a Similar, Less Obvious Effect

Homes with forced-air heating often have lower humidity in winter than most people realize, and that dry air pulls moisture out of leather the same way it dries out skin. Leather furniture positioned near a heating vent is at higher risk for this reason specifically.

Cleaning Without Conditioning Makes It Worse, Not Better

Cleaning removes surface dirt but can also strip some of the remaining natural oils if it isn't followed by conditioning. Leather that's cleaned repeatedly without conditioning becomes progressively drier over time, which is the exact opposite of what most people expect from regular cleaning.

What Actually Prevents Cracking

Consistent conditioning every few months, limited direct sun exposure, and keeping leather away from direct heat sources together do most of the work in preventing cracks from forming in the first place. Once cracking has started, conditioning can improve flexibility, but it generally can't fully reverse cracks that have already set in.
